Another notable sight is the Villa of Herodes Atticus, a few kilometers outside Astros. Herodes Atticus -a famous politician and sophist- built the Estate in the 2nd century B.C. in the area of the ancient town Eva. The Villa of Herodes Atticus is the most important and richest monument from the roman period and especially from the 2nd century B.C. It was located in 1809 by Leake, an English traveller while Prof. Constantine Romaios identified it in the beginning of the 20th century.
The excavations began in 1980.
